Awakening True Powers: Beyond Superficial Strengths
In today’s film industry, we increasingly encounter movies featuring superheroes. Think of films like Spiderman, Superman, the Avengers, and more. These superhero movies reflect something within us. They portray our dreams and fantasies of gaining superpowers because, deep down, we all sense that we can transcend our human limitations.
While watching such films, we momentarily forget our own limited lives and can immerse ourselves in the fantasy world of superheroes. It’s an innocent desire, as who wouldn’t dream of flying like Superman? However, these films often focus on sensation, violence, and visual effects, offering entertainment and distraction but lacking substance.
Recently, I watched a film titled “Limitless,” an action-thriller about an unsuccessful writer who uses an experimental drug allowing him to utilize 100% of his brain capacity. Evolving into the ‘perfect version’ of himself, he achieves remarkable results: completing his novel in a week, mastering foreign languages in a day, attracting beautiful women effortlessly, and recalling everything he has ever seen or read.
This film presents a tempting idea – the human longing to live up to one’s highest potential. However, what saddens me about this story is how the protagonist misuses his acquired powers. He uses his abilities to amass wealth, seduce women, and gain power, not truly living up to his highest potential but indulging in a massive ego trip.
Exploring our fantasies and dreams about superpowers, a crucial question arises: Why do we desire superpowers? The answer that surfaces is that we want to feel special, be admired, accepted, and loved by others. In essence, we yearn for superpowers because we seek validation from others. Would you still desire superpowers if only you were aware of them? This reflection helps discern if the desire stems from a need for external validation.
The misuse of powers for gaining power or seeking validation reveals the maturity of an individual in their spiritual development. You might wonder what true superpowers are – powers unrelated to appearance, power, or the desire for validation.
A beautiful example is found in the movie “Groundhog Day.” The film follows a grumpy weatherman named Phil, who, reluctantly assigned to cover a story in a small town, wakes up every morning reliving the same – not particularly good – day.
Phil seems trapped in a time loop, experiencing the same day repeatedly. Initially, he falls into a deep depression and decides to end his own life. However, even this doesn’t free him from his fate. Every morning, he wakes up to the same day.
The film takes a different turn when Phil decides to showcase the best of himself regardless of circumstances. The protagonist gradually transforms from a grumpy guy to someone exhibiting a beautiful attitude towards life. He chooses to be warm, interested, and friendly to his colleagues. Instead of passing by people on the street, he now shows compassion and service. During his weather reports, he carefully chooses his words, speaking from the heart. The attractive woman in the film, whom he initially tried to impress, he now sees for her inner beauty, and she is drawn to him for his authentic, loving attitude. In short, what used to bring him great annoyance every day, his positive attitude now brings him the best day ever.
In the current challenging world conditions, the manifestation of true superpowers becomes even more crucial. The ability to display a positive attitude in the face of adversity is, in my opinion, the mark of a true superhero. When life presents its most formidable challenges, individuals who can express their true powers—such as kindness, service, humor, love, attention, authenticity, forgiveness, wisdom, and gentleness—stand out as beacons of hope and inspiration.
I could share numerous personal examples illustrating how these true superpowers have made a difference in my own life, but I prefer to remain a ‘nice guy’ undercover. As highlighted in the movie examples, true empowerment occurs when we transcend our limited egos. It’s not about me; the goal is to be a warm, kind, and friendly presence in every moment. My desire is to bring love to everybody I encounter and to be an uplifter. In essence, my superpower is caring about people.
What about you? Reflect on the superpowers you are awakening. Share your experiences in the comments below and let’s celebrate the diverse ways in which each of us can be a positive force in the world. Together, we can inspire others to tap into their true powers and contribute to a more compassionate and uplifting collective existence.
